Church of the Week

Church of the Week

Gillingham, Kent

Records of a church on the site of Gillingham St Mary Magdalene, Kent, date back to the Doomsday book, with the earliest parts of the current building dating back to the 13th century. Will Adams, the famous explorer and sailor, who established links between England and Japan, was baptised at the church. The church still has strong links with Japan and runs a student exchange programme with Japan and welcomes Japanese tourists to the building throughout the year. A £5,000 National Churches Trust Grant will help to pay for urgent repairs to the tower, ensuring the church can thrive today and tomorrow. On the recommendation of the National Churches Trust, the church will also receive a £10,000 Wolfson Fabric Repair Grant from the Wolfson Foundation.
