Supporting you

The responsibility for caring for places of worship often falls on the shoulders of a small number of individuals and volunteers. Caring for such a building can bring great satisfaction as well as being a burden.

However daunting, nobody is alone in facing the challenges such a building can produce. There is a great deal of support and information readily available. The following pages aim to provide support, information and point you in the right direction for the best available advice and guidance.

For most places of worship, your denomination will be your first port of call, especially if you are thinking of undertaking any major work. If you are responsible for a listed building, then the relevant government heritage body will also have important advice and guidance.

However, the National Churches Trust is also here to help you. Our National Support Officer can be contacted for advice and information at support@nationalchurchestrust.org or on 020 7776 1042, and this section of the website also provides a range of information and links.

In Support and Advice you will find guidance on maintenance, conservation, Friends Groups and engaging with your community. If you are looking for details of further local support, see what is available In Your Area.

GRANTS

Since its formation, the National Churches Trust has supported important projects at a wide range of Christian places of worship through its grants programmes. Details of our grants programmes for 2012 can be found on the Grants pages here. For more information, please download the National Churches Trust Grant Guidance Notes.

If you are planning a project and your place of worship is sited in England we would advise you to contact your local County Churches Trust. Visit the In Your Area section to find out how to contact them in order to see if your project is eligible for their support. If your building is in Scotland please contact the Scottish Churches Architectural Heritage Trust.

Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN) awards grants from the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) in England, Scotland and Wales. The WREN Heritage Fund makes grants towards structural repair projects at Grade I or II* places of worship within a 10 mile radius of a Waste Recycling Group (WRG) or other landfill site. The estimated cost of the repairs must be at least £50,000. The National Churches Trust makes recommendations to WREN for church restoration projects in England. Grants are then decided and awarded by WREN once a year. We are currently looking for projects to be considered in 2012. Please see the National Churches Trust Grant Guidance Notes for details.
