Supporting You - Finding Funding

finding funding

Raising funds for repairs and refurbishment is one of the most significant challenges facing any individual or group caring for places of worship.  Applying for funding can be a complex process but fortunately there is support and guidance available. Hopefully you will find something here to begin the process of finding the most suitable source of funding for your project.

One of the first barriers to overcome is the common misconception that faith-based bodies are unable to receive public funding. In an attempt to remove these misconceptions the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), has published guidelines that directly target these issues and concerns. At its heart is the expression that places of worship are well placed to make far reaching, and positive contributions to the communities in which they sit.  Another useful resource is Churches and Faith Buildings: Realising the Potential. This government document is aimed at developing places of worship to make them better able to deliver public services. It deals directly with the excellent community work done by places of worship and highlights the funding opportunities for increased community involvement.

Where can you find funding?

There are a number of sources that provide funding for a vast range of capital works and activities. There are funds available for specialist conservation works, fabric repairs, on-going maintenance schemes, installation of new facilities and developing community services.

By visiting the In Your Area section of this website you will be able to search through a range of funding bodies who may be able to offer you financial support. The information is categorised by regions and you will be able to identify specific funds available within your part of the country.

Church fundraising consultant Maggie Durran has a guide to fundraising sources that may be of use to those embarking on projects - The UK Church Fundraising Handbook: A Practical Manual and Directory of Sources, and later in 2011 will also publish Making the Most of Your Church's Money: A Practical Guide.

The Methodist Church and Churchcare websites provide a wealth of information relevant to all faith communities. Both sites offer advice on finding funding for projects of all sizes.

The Architectural Heritage Fund has a searchable database of Funds for Historic Buildings, which can be filtered by geographical area, type of organisation and building use. Parish Resources is specifically relevant for the Church of England but also contains a number of guides on elements of fund raising which will be of interest to all, including VAT recovery, fundraising events, gift aid and community funding.
