St John's is a beautiful red brick church consecrated in 1899 and containing many stained glass windows and a fine pipe organ built by Thomas Pendlebury of Leigh.

There is a tradition that this impressive church occupies the site of an ancient Druidical altar.

From the 13th century, established under the Abbey of Winchcombe, to the current day, the church has been and still is the centre of the community in Great Alne.

It is believed that the present building has its origins in 12th century but there was probably an earlier Anglo Saxon or even Celtic church, for the boundary of the original churchyard forms an almost perfect circle, a feature shared with many churches of known Celtic origin.

In 1132, 13 monks came here to start a simpler life.
