Ashby is a remote hamlet and its medieval church of St Andrew is approached across a farmyard. The churchyard affords fabulous views across the Wolds.

The church stands some way from the village, isolated but not austere.

Dating from circa 1100, and beautifully restored in the 19th century All Saints church holds many reminders of the remarkable Victorian hymn writer Reverend Sir Henry Williams Baker.

The church was built 1915, stone with Westmorland slate roof.

For centuries this was an estate church to a succession of families; the Burnabys, Clerkes, and then the Henley/Eden family who successively owned the Watford Estate and Manor here.

The parish church was built in the 13th century of local limestone, but most of what we can see today is the result of a comprehensive rebuilding in 1865 by architect James Fowler of Louth.

A place of worship has stood on the site for 900 years although the present building, built of local greenstone, is mainly 14th century.

Across the square from Caernarfon Castle, the church was opened in 1883 to hold English services in this very Welsh town.

An interesting example of Gothic revival, St Peter’s sits on a prominent location next to the Norman motte and bailey with good stained glass, eclectic mix of window tracery, six bell peal and fine organ.

There has probably been a church in Great Salkeld since 880 AD, when the body of St Cuthbert was rested here after being brought from Holy Island.

The only church dedicated to St Idloes, a 7th century saint about whom very little is known
