Find a church

A church has stood here since 1115, at the centre of a cluster of buildings, including manor house, guild house and rectory, all still surviving.

An evocative setting, in front of Muchelney Abbey and opposite the medieval Priest’s House, internally, the unique ceiling was painted in the 1600s with angels in Tudor costumes.

The church tower is a landmark for a long way around, and was rebuilt in 1861 to the original medieval designs, but in blue lias stone, rather than the Ham stone from which the rest of the church is built.

Breamore is one of the most famous and important Saxon churches in England, notable for its many Saxon details, but especially for the Saxon inscription carved into the arch of the south porticus.

The church dates from around 1450 and is built of red sandstone, with a tall, typically Somerset tower and contains a fabulous rood turret housing the spiral stair leading to the top of the rood screen.

The ancient cross in the churchyard is 15th century and two giant yews were grown to provide soldier’s bows and are said to be among the oldest in the diocese.

The church, which has some Saxon features, has been at the heart of the community for over 900 years.

A unique stone vaulted 14th century chapel with internationally recognised memorial statues and was the living of Thomas Wolsey from 1500-19.

Dating mainly from the 1190s, Warnford church has an earlier tower and Saxon roots. The first church on the site may have been built by St Wilfrid in the 680s.

This tucked away church, rebuilt in the 18th century, is internationally known for its astonishing set of windows by the 20th century Russian born artist Marc Chagall, better known for his paintings and for his dramatic cathedral glass in France and at Chichester.
