The dedication to The Holy Paraclete is unique in England.

A fine example of a Georgian church, complete with balcony as well as interesting stained glass windows depicting the life of St Cuthbert and a moving pulpit, the only one of its type in the country.

Welcome to the world of Romans, Vikings, medieval monks and contemporary Christian community as you tour the grounds and see the surviving monastic buildings, the Georgian residences where the present Canons live, and the peaceful gardens.

First mentioned in 1183 in the Bolden Book, here are two 13th century stone effigies of a knight in armour and his lady.

A beautiful and historic village church.

12th century Norman church, built with stones from Hadrian’s Wall and where King Edward I (Longshanks) lay in state in the church for ten days in 1307.

This ‘hidden gem’ is the earliest known surviving example of a small English parish church designed by ‘God’s Architect’ Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.

Situated prominently in the heart of the village, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, St Mary’s is the only church actually on the course of Hadrian's Wall.

This tiny church is in fact the remnants of the original church of the village of Upleatham, northwest of Whitby.
