This delightful little parish church dates back to 1843.

A Saxon church with Roman fabric hidden inside a Norman exterior, two ancient churches for the price of one, added to which a unique collection of medieval wall paintings from the 12th to 17th century.

John Betjeman, observed that ‘within and without, the church has the charm of old watercolours’.

The roots of Wade Street Church go back over 400 years with the current building opened in 1812. It is still standing today and the outside is more or less unchanged.

St Mary's is a beautiful Grade I listed church and is one of only two medieval churches that remain in Southampton, and it was even mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The church is an ambitious and self-confident Gothic style building by G B Cox, erected between the wars and finished in 1934.

The creation of this outstanding late Victorian gothic church was made possible by its patron the local brewer Pickering Phipps, the local architect Matthew Henry Holding and its first incumbent Revd JR Hussey.

From the churchyard full of orange hawkweed, knapweed and other native wild flowers there are spectacular views of the mountains with the legendary lake Llyn y Fan Fach, where a shepherd boy fell in love with a lady who appeared from the lake.
