The church was founded in Saxon times. The earliest documentary reference to the church relates to the appropriation of the church to Merton Priory between 1186 and 1200. The oldest parts of the building are the base of the tower and nave, dating from the 12th century. In more recent times the chancel ceiling was designed by SE Dykes Bowers and there is ongoing interest in the hinges of the Aumbrey, which date back to 1200 AD.
