A Chapel of Ease was founded at Bishop Monkton in the year 1356, dedicated to St Mary & St Helen was built by the villagers. References to the use of the chapel continue through the next five centuries although documents from 1608 suggest the fabric was deteriorating. In 1822 a simple new chapel was built and dedicated to St John the Evangelist on part of the same site. A substantial new church was built slightly to the north of the old chapel in 1878, replacing the previous building which was demolished.

The present church in the early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, organ chamber, two vestries and a western tower, which at one time contained only one bell. ln 1910 five Tubular bells were installed and at a later period three more were added, which completed the octave.

The east window is a stained glass memorial to the Revd Robert Poole, Rural Dean and for many years incumbent of the parish. The lychgate was erected in 1962 in memory of the family of John Butterfield resident in this village since 1846.

The War Memorial in the churchyard takes the form of an lonian Cross in Cornish granite and is in memory of the fallen of both the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 wars.
