Prior to 1684, Dunbarney parish church stood a mile to the west in the burial ground near the mansion of Dunbarney. In 1684 a church was erected a few yards from the present building. The present rectangular plan church was built in 1787. A pedimented bellcote was added, the interior recast and other alterations made in 1880.

In 1923 the interior of the church was reconstructed, removing the east gallery and locating the pulpit and communion table at the east end so re-orientating the seating. The pipe organ, built by John Miller, Dundee, was installed in 1929. The first ever Scottish communion service to be broadcast in Scotland on radio and also the first to be televised took place in Dunbarney Church in 1950 and 1953 respectively. In 2024, the sanctuary underwent a major refurbishment with removal of the pews, installation of air-source heating and LED lighting to reduce our carbon footprint. This now provides a lovely, welcoming space for the use of the whole community.
