Construction on the Burghead Free Church building began follow the disruption of 1843 (a seminal moment in Scottish Church History),and was completed two years later in 1845 at the cost of £602. The church originally had 'sittings for 600 souls'.

It was built in simple style by local craftsmen from locally mined sandstone, with arched windows on both sides the name of the architect is not recorded. Inside there is a gallery around three sides, a fine wooden pulpit dominates at the front of the sanctuary, and the ceiling is complete with fine cornicing. Later in the 1840s a Free Church school was constructed behind and attached to the church which is now the church halls.

The church was significantly modernised in 2017 with moveable chairs and many other comfortable fixtures and fittings, as well as contemporary audio-visual equipment.
