Buxton Methodist Church is identified as a landmark building in the Conservation Area Appraisal and as such is regarded as an undesignated heritage asset of some importance.

The main church building was built in 1849, in gritstone with pierced gable parapets and a steeply-pitched slate roof, and has been in almost continuous use as a place of worship ever since. The premises have been extended to the rear many times (in the 1870s, 1890s, 1930s, 1980s and 1990s) and there have been several phases of refurbishment, including a major modernisation of the worship space in the late 1960s, following the amalgamation of congregations from two churches onto one site.

The Vision 2000 project upon which the congregation embarked in the early 1980s involved totally re-roofing the main church, (architect: Donald Buttress). More recently, the solid timber, front doors have been replaced with glazed leaves incorporating pointed arch tracery and in 2017 access ramps with locally-made iron railings were constructed, symmetrically flanking the entrance steps.

In the 1990s, the continuing development of the whole premises resulted in considerably improved community facilities to the rear of the building. A new stair tower was constructed to access a first floor suite of rooms formed over the main hall, and the 1930s flat-roofed school rooms were refurbished to provide a commercial-grade kitchen and dividable lower meeting room.

  • We have a five-year plan, underpinned by our Mission Statement, to be a church that is “welcome to all, and where all are working together for God in our community”. The church’s community rooms are in use throughout the week for a wide range of activities - from yoga classes to choir practices, NHS staff conferences to Brownies. Pre-pandemic, we estimated that 250-300 people (10-15 groups) used our community rooms every week, excluding worship and one-off events.

  • We enjoy a wide range of styles of worship, enhanced by high quality music. Our 10.30am Sunday morning services follow a customary Methodist pattern, with traditional hymns and modern songs. Monthly Praise at 6 services are informal, with contemporary music, refreshments and discussion. Ecumenical Taizé services are held quarterly.
