The church opened for worship 1902, replacing the Old Parish Church which stood on the other side of the main street. The Romanesque design is by Peter MacGregor Chalmers.

There is an aisled nave with a gallery above the east aisle. Stained glass includes striking War Memorial windows in the south gable by Margaret Chilton and Marjorie Kemp, and the chancel window by Douglas Strachan depicting the empty tomb.

The 3 manual and pedal pipe organ was built by HS Vincent of Sunderland in 1902, rebuilt in 1989 and 1999 by John R Lightbown & Sons. The side chapel is designated St Stephen’s Chapel following the Union of Carnoustie Parish Church with the former St Stephen’s Free Church (now demolished).

The church is the only Trade Kirk in Scotland, and is still the scene of the colourful Kirkin of the Trades held in November.
