Chop Gate, Yorkshire
The Earl of Feversham built a new church in 1851 on the grounds of the old church of 1145 when the ecclesiastical parish was then called Bilsdale Priory in an area around Bilsdale/ Chop Gate by Banks and Barry in early English style of architecture. There are few traces of the old building notably the Font and several pieces of ancient masonry in the church and church yard. 18th century gravestones and ancient bells.
Tenor bell bears the inscription 'Ave Maria Mater'. It also has a badge which is the mark of Walter of Easingwold, a potter of York who obtained his freedom to trade in1327.
The church has a alter and alter rails, Victorian brass cross and candlesticks designed by Barry. Victorian glass stained windows portrays the mystery of the Crucifixion. Commandment boards either side of the alter in the chancel. Great chancel arch through where the choir stalls are. The chancel fine oak screen was erected in memory of a formal vicar. It proclaims the dramatic figures of the crucifixion.
We are Eco Church and have received the Bronze award from A Roche UK for the church and churchyard. The churchyard is a haven for wild animals ,birds and wild flowers and grasses. We only cut the grass once a year in September and have small animals and bug hotel in the churchyard.
