Why visit only one Cathedral when in Coventry you can visit three?!
For a thousand years, Coventry has been a place of pilgrimage where visitors are greeted with a warm welcome, and this continues within Coventry Cathedral today.
Visitors can view the remains of St Mary’s Priory, founded in the 12th century and destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution of the Monasteries.
Bombed in the Coventry Blitz of November 1940, the Ruined Medieval Cathedral stands as a testimony to peace, hope, and reconciliation in the face of destruction. Also located in the Ruins is the The Blitz Experience museum, where you will hear inspiring stories of the resilience of the people of Coventry, and their determination to build a more peaceful world in the face of this destruction.
Should you be feeling energetic, you can climb the 180 steps to the top of our tower, the third highest in England, where you can take in amazing views of Coventry and the surrounding areas.
You can then follow Basil Spence’s vision down the Queen’s steps into the new Cathedral, taking in one of the most significant collections of artworks from the 1950s and 60s, including works by John Piper, John Hutton, Graham Sutherland, Jacob Epstein, and Elisabeth Frink amongst others.
With a truly stunning array of stained glass, and some wonderfully unique pieces of art and sculpture, the ‘New’ Cathedral really does live up to Spence’s promise of a ‘Casket of Jewels’. For group visitors, pre-booked guided tours are available from one of our expert guides, many of whom have been a part of the Cathedral community for many years.
As the UK’s favourite 20th century building, Coventry Cathedral is a remarkable and inspiring place to visit and we would love to welcome you.
