Crowland Abbey

A giant splinter of masonry clings to the side of the church here. Apart from the north aisle, which has been the parish church since the 15th century, it is all that remains of the great abbey church and its buildings that once stood on this site.

Crowland, Lincolnshire

Opening times

The church doors are open from 8.30am and guides are available from 11am until 3pm in winter or 4pm in summer.
The guides lock the church when leaving.

The abbey had an eventful history: sacked by the Danes, burned down twice, then demolished at the Dissolution.

The north aisle did not escape upheaval after that, being abused by both sides during the 17th century civil war.

The ruined masonry that still stands was the west front of the abbey church; there are still saints in the niches on it. The tower and its porch are from the 15th century.
