St Barnabas

For many years St Barnabas has been known as ‘The Church on the North Downs Way’ and one unusual feature is that the main door faces away from the road since it was designed to be entered from the Great House.
Dorking URC was founded in 1662 by two clergymen who had been ejected from the Church of England because they refused to subscribe to the Act of Uniformity.

It was the first ‘dissenting church’ in Dorking. The present building was constructed in 1834/5. It has a typical non conformist interior with a baroque balcony, good quality pews and some interesting marble memorial plaques.
The oldest part of the buildings, the ‘chapel’, was built in 1834/5 by William Shearburn to the designs of William Hopperton, an architect from Pimilico. It has a typical non conformist interior with a baroque balcony, good quality pews and some interesting marble memorial plaques.
The premises have been extended over the years to include an attractive Edwardian hall and a ‘Little Chapel’ constructed in the 1930s.
