Dunscore Church

We look forward to welcoming you to Dunscore Heritage Centre.

There is a fascinating 19th century church building to discover, designed by a local architect in 'Heritor's Gothic' style and incorporating elements from earlier Dunscore churches.

Following recent renovations, a heritage centre has been incorporated into the church. In the centre you can find out much more about the church itself and about the history of Christianity in the Dunscore Parish dating back to the 12th century. There is plenty to discover about local life and a short 'memory walk' around the village past the site of the village library that was started by the poet Robert Burns and a hearse house, one of very few remaining in Scotland.

You can also find out about the amazing life of local lass, Jane Haining, who is one of very few UK recipients of a Hero of the Holocaust medal. This was awarded posthumously in 2012 for her work with Jewish girls in a Scottish Mission in Hungary before and during the second world war where she refused to leave her charges and lost her life in Auschwitz in 1944.
