St Michael Archangel

The 12th century church is Grade I listed and contains a number of important listed monuments in the church and churchyard.
It has an outstanding Victorian Painting scheme in its chancel and a rare medieval wall painting. There is a superb stained glass memorial window by the Arts & Crafts inspired Karl Parsons. There is other excellent stained glass created by Burlison and Grylls.
There is a fine monument to a Tudor Knight Sir John Newton who was at the court of Henry VIII. The church has a 15th century tower with lovely decorative stonework at the top including a sun dial. Its six bells are all restored and three are listed and one dates from 15th century. Externally the church has seven Hunky Punks (not gargoyles, rather they are grotesque decorative beasts). The churchyard is closed but is carefully managed by the East Harptree Environment Group to create a place that encourages plant, insect and wildlife habitats and it welcomes walkers to the nearby SSSI Harptree Coombe and is a place to rest and refresh. During the restoration works rare early 17th century gravestones were discovered (before that time gravestones were not used) which are to be displayed in the church.
An interpretation project is underway to provide touchscreens and other ways to learn more about the church and the local area. The church has undergone major conservation works supported by amongst others the National Heritage Lottery Fund and National Churches Trust.
