Find a church

A gem at the heart of a busy corner of west London.

The most visited attraction in Derby, its monuments and history, undertaking tours of the tower and enjoying its calm reflective environment.

Set in the estate village of Lilford Hall this cruciform medieval church with its fine tower and spire was restored by lord Lilford and his architect William Slater in the 1860s and 70s.

After falling into disrepair St Mary's was rebuilt in 1879 by the Earl of Portsmouth. Its Norman roots can be found in the arch above the south porch and the small chancel window.

Dating largely from the 14th century, this little chapel originally stood on the first arch of a medieval bridge over the Derwent; the springing of the arch can still be seen below the east wall.

A family church.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was one of 19th century England's foremost architects, a proponent of Gothic Revival, and the mastermind behind the Houses of Parliament in London.

In a conservation area in the tiny village of Frisby on the Wreake (255 houses), near the market town of Melton Mowbray, the church is as delightful as it sounds.

The whole church is, in a way, a memorial to the Watts Russell family whose seat is at nearby Biggin Hall.

For many years St Barnabas has been known as ‘The Church on the North Downs Way’ and one unusual feature is that the main door faces away from the road since it was designed to be entered from the Great House.
