The church is built on the site of a Saxon place of worship, of which little remains, there is a priests door in the south wall with a preNorman tympanum which is probably the oldest part of the church.

Stilton has always been an important place geographically, situated at the side of a major Roman road, Ermine Street, and the area around Stilton and Folksworth was also the site of a major Prisoner of War Camp from Napoleonic times.

The present church and burial vault were built for Richard (the 4th Earl Scarbrough 1725-82) in the classical style around 1775 and is believed to have been designed by Lancelot Capability Brown the great 18th century landscape architect.
