St Mary the Virgin
Weston Turville, Buckinghamshire
A very warm welcome to our beautiful medieval church, which lies tucked away down a quiet lane on the south side of the village.
The parish church of Buckinghamshire's county town, St Mary's is used for all ceremonial county services, dominating the old part of Aylesbury.
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
It has its own little cathedral like close in St Mary's Square, surrounded by old houses.
It is an example of a large town church of the 13th century and is cruciform in plan with a massive central tower.
The tower is surmounted by a square lead clad clockstage with arcaded parapet and pinnacles above which rises a short lead clad spire, known as a Hertfordshire Spike. Sir George Gilbert Scott carried out extensive restoration work here in the 1850s and 60s, including replacing the late Perpendicular east window. In fact he has been criticised for destroying the medieval fabric by doing so.
In the north transept is an alabaster monument to Lady Lee, who died in 1584. She is kneeling with her daughter and in front of her is a vase of red flowers that are always kept fresh.
The highlight of the church is its Norman font, one of several in Buckinghamshire called 'Aylesbury' fonts. It is shaped like a chalice and has delicate carving based on foliage.
