An inspiring place of pilgrimage for centuries and visited by St Winifred en route from Holywell to Gwytherin, where she would become abbess and end her life.

St Tysilio's is set in an idyllic position in meadows close to the River Wye with a backdrop of wooded hills and period cottages close by.

Beautifully set in a churchyard which is a conservation area and contains the remains of a medieval preaching cross, St David's has a 14th century tower.

This is not what you expect to find on the lanes of Herefordshire: a church seemingly plucked from southern Italy and plopped down beside the Wye.

John Betjeman, observed that ‘within and without, the church has the charm of old watercolours’.

Simon Jenkins, when chairman of the national trust, wrote 'Thaxted is the Queen of Essex and her crown is the church'.
