A beautiful Grade I, Saxon-Norman church with important medieval wall paintings, set in the very attractive, natural landscape of the South Downs.

The old church at Mereworth was found to spoil the view of John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland, from his splendid new Palladian house, so he demolished it (he had already done away with the old castle and the village) and built a new classical church, and a new village, nearby.

Nestled at the bottom of a hill on the outskirts of the village, St Mary’s church, built of local heathstone is steeped in history.

A church in Hatherleigh is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as 'Hadrelaia', but no trace of the pre-Norman structure remains above the ground.
