Traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dating back to the early 1200s before the village of Newland came into existence.

The original chapel was built around 1746 by Richard Smedley, a mining magnate from Risley, on land given by the Earl of Stamford.

The present church is largely Victorian and is located at the highest point in the town.

St Peter’s church is a large honey coloured stone built church, prominent in the centre of the village with a large west tower and a fine western doorway.
