The church was founded in 1777 by by Willielma Maxwell, Viscountess Glenorchy, Lady Glenorchy, as an Independent Church.

There is a framed copy of a painting of Lady Glenorchy by Gainsborough in the foyer and there are plaques to previous ministers of the church around the walls of the sanctuary.

The building (built 1867) was built in the Early Decorated style. There is a Sunday School Banner dating from the late Victorian era mounted in a glass case above the vestibule. A Bevington organ from the 1880s is used regularly.

There is a small graveyard attached to the church, now used as a car park. Gravestones are laid around the car park.
