Bircham Newton, Norfolk
Great Bircham, Norfolk
A grant to help fund a project to improve the abutment details on the nave, chancel, porch, north and south aisle roofs, repair the clerestory walls, replace the rainwater goods, improve the drains and re-lead some of the windows. St Mary the Virgin was built in the early 1300s. The large churchyard contains a Cross of Sacrifice, which was unveiled by King George VI in 1946. There are 66 Allied airmen and eleven German war graves. With a splendid Norman doorway to the tower, the church also has Victorian box pews help to keep the congregation a little warmer in winter. A 13th century font has a wooden cover topped with a dove, symbolising the Holy Spirit. The pulpit dates from the 1600s and stands in front of a 15th century rood screen.
