Great Torrington has a fascinating and colourful history.
The imposing parish church of Weare Giffard was built in the 13th century and enhanced to its present size in the 15th century. It is one of the more important examples in North Devon of the beautiful medieval churches built in this period.

The church contains many important and classical features including the tombs and effigies of Sir Walter Giffard and his wife, dated about 1243; a medieval wall painting of St. Sebastian, an early Christian saint and martyr; imposing Jesse windows and a dominant wagon roof; finely hand carved 15th century pew ends, each one representing the major historical families of the village; a stylish chancel roof; a fascinating memorial representing three generations of the Fortescue family; and a recently installed vibrant new window designed by Ingrid Meyveart the internationally renowned Belgian glass artist.
