There has been a church on this site, in a prominent position right on the edge of a greensands cliff, since at least 1150AD.
By 1850, it was in a dangerous condition and was demolished; its place being taken by a new church designed by George Evans and paid for by its patron, Sir Richard Glyn, at a cost of £2,500.
It is situated on the edge of Cranborne Chase with footpaths leading up to the National Trust's Melbury Beacon, with views across Cranborne Chase and the Blackmore Vale.

Situated in the valley beside the river Nadder, there has been a church here serving as a centre for Christian worship for at least a thousand years and it is believed that the first church may have been built soon after the founding of Shaftesbury Abbey in about 875.
