St John the Baptist
Belton, Leicestershire
This was the first Cistercian foundation in England since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.
Coalville, Leicestershire
The church, designed by AWN Pugin in the late 1830s and extended a century later in the 1930s, is at the centre of a working abbey, but visitors are welcome to the church, and to see a little of the monastic way of life.
Pugin became a devout Catholic, and believed that the best architectural expression of Catholic faith was the Gothic style.
The abbey church here still bears the imprint of his passionately held beliefs, but the changes made in the 1930s altered the layout that he designed.
