Owston church dates back to 1170 when it was build as an Augustinian Priory linked to the historic nearby Launde Abbey. It had a series of medieval fishponds to provide a regular supply of fish for the community who lived in the adjacent cloisters. During the Reformation the chancel and cloisters were demolished but the main structure was allowed to remain as a parish church. The tower and short spire survived, dated 1300. It is thought that in the adjacent field there may have been a garden of Gethsemane.

The church is detailed in Pevsner's The Buildings of England, Leicestershire on page 206. Its importance was reflected by being the subject of an extensive archaeological survey by Leicestershire County Council in 1998.
