The building is C13 and later, with C19 chancel. The 2013 Quinquennial identified the need for work to the north aisle roof. Work became urgent when lead was stolen at the end of August 2016, and another area of slate roofing required attention. With the support of this grant, the whole of the north aisle roof will now be replaced with steel and roof alarm will be installed. In addition, the catchpits for the roof will be enlarged to stop rainwater overflowing which has caused internal dampness.

The story of St Helen's is very much tied to the story of the ruined castle just to the south as both castle and church were built in the 1470s by Lord Hastings.
