A daughter church of Selby Abbey, it is thought to have been a pilgrimage site for the followers of St Scytha and St Ethelreda. Until the 1860s it was a 'Peculiar' boasting its own Consistory Court.
Features include, the 13th century 'squat' tower, a niche to St Scytha, a number of chantry chapels and a sculpture of Viscount Downe by Francis Chantrey.
