South Stoke, Sussex
The parish church of St. Leonard, South Stoke is a Grade I Listed, 11th century building and described by it’s many visitors as 'wonderful', 'beautiful', 'peaceful', 'a stunning little church in an idyllic setting'.
It is tucked away in the South Downs near Arundel and overlooks the River Arun. Built in the 11th Century, for much of its history this small flint church has stood on its own as a parish church serving nearby farm workers and their families. The church is basically the original 11th century building, with various restorations carried out over the years, particularly in the 19th century, such as the spire. The porch is 13th century, as is the tower, and the tall lancet windows in the west wall of the nave.
Inside, under the bell tower, is a memorial to Sir Hugh Cairns, the eminent brain surgeon, who lived in the nearby Old Rectory. He was present at the last operation on TE Lawrence (Lawrence Of Arabia). The church is without electricity and water, and is lit by dozens of candles for the two regular services every month, plus weddings and baptisms.
