Wigston Magna, Leicestershire
An imposing late Victorian intrigue of grandeur and simplicity on one site.
South Wigston, Leicestershire
St Thomas’ is a late Victorian brick built church and is an important landmark for the local community.
Impressive and vast in scale, its interior is surprisingly simple and unfussy. One of its main features is the large open plan nave which allows good visibility and access for the congregation. It also provides generous acoustics which are invaluable when hosting concerts. Other notable features within the church include: a large Taylor pipe organ, late Victorian and pre WWII stained glass windows, two sets of late 20th century hanging banners by Juliet Hemingray, and a large stonework font. The tower houses a ring of eight bells, cast by Taylors of Loughborough.
For those interested in military history, St Thomas was the regimental church for the Leicestershire Regiment when they were based at the nearby barracks. Inside the church there are three monument plaques dedicated to officers from the regiment. Outside there is a war memorial erected in honour of local people who lost their lives during the Second World War. The clock of the tower is also a war memorial to those who lost their lives in the Great War.
