The church was completed in 1861 and consecrated in 1864. It was squeezed in (running north to south) between a biscuit factory on the east side and a terrace of small houses on the west, in a crowded working-class district. St Luke’s was designed by the Victorian architect Thomas Hellyer, following a competition. The design is notable because its nave, aisles, apse and a 'west' gallery have references to Norman style and dormer windows take the place of a clerestory.
