South Lopham, Norfolk
It is clearly Norman, but also has traces of Saxon work. Inside, there is further Norman work to be seen, particularly in the arches of the crossing, but there are also later elements. The handsome font is 14th century, as is the arcade.
One feature of special interest is the low side window, complete with wooden shutter. This was placed so that those not attending a service could hear the sanctus bell ringing and pause for prayer.
On the floor of the nave is a massive, ancient dugout chest, its body made from a single tree trunk. It was discovered during repairs to the tower in 1968, and may date back as far as the 900s.
