St Peter
Wilburton, Cambridgeshire
There are strong echoes of the famous octagon of nearby Ely Cathedral in the silhouette of St Andrew's, proudly set on its ridge and visible for miles across the Fens.
Sutton in the Isle, Cambridgeshire
Completed some 50 years after Ely, in 1388, Sutton has two octagons, one on top of the other, crowning its square tower. This was the last construction phase of a building that was completed within little more than 25 years under direction of two bishops of Ely.
The magnificent vaulted two storey south porch forms the centrepiece of the south front, which is rich in refined detailing: buttresses, battlements, gargoyles and lovely window tracery.
The interior space has an appropriately grand feel, with soaring arcades and tower arch, blind arcading along all the walls, and an immense and exuberant east window in late Decorated style.
