Satley, Northumberland
There has been a place of Christian worship on the site since at least 1200 AD. Satley, along with Esh and Medomsley was one of the three medieval chapels of Lanchester. It fell into decay following the dissolution of the monasteries and was mostly rebuilt in about 1768. The west end, the tower and the gallery were added in 1829 to the designs of Ignatius Bonomi. The chancel and vestry were added in 1870/71 to the designs of Charles Hodgson Fowler. There are two medieval grave covers built into the west wall, near the font. The story is that there were ten, along with a standing cross in the churchyard, which the vicar ordered to be broken and buried, but the churchwardens were able to grab one each and run off with them. The small but good organ was built by Harrison & Harrison of Durham. There are four stained glass windows, all by Clayton & Bell of London. The churchyard has rural charm and includes the woodland wildlife reserve to the west. where visitors are welcome.
