Hessett, Suffolk
The porch and tower are particularly fine, with intricately carved stone parapets, pinnacles and East Anglian flint flushwork, all bearing witness to the wealthy 15th century patrons who are celebrated in shields and inscriptions.
The inside of the building lives up to this promise, with its grand Perpendicular nave arcades and, everywhere, powerful evidence of the medieval church: the delicate tracery of the screen; the clergy stalls in the 14th century chancel; lovely stained glass; and the richly carved octagonal font of about 1451.
Several wall paintings survive, including a graphic Seven Deadly Sins dating from the 1370s. Beneath it is a rare 15th century Christ of the Trades, depicting various medieval tools.
