The King of All England, King Edgar was crowned on this site in 973 and the service set the precedent for the coronation of all future Kings and Queens of England including Elizabeth II.
With the first vicar recorded in 1210, this lovely area has had a place of worship for over eight centuries. The present building mainly dates from 1845, but contains many earlier elements. It remains an active centre of worship in the present day.
Small, comprehensive, written guides will take the visitor round the interior of the church and through the churchyard, from the Norman doorway via the 15th century pulpit, past fine stained glass windows and organ through to more modern additions/alterations in the south aisle to the 12th / 13th century font. Back outside, church and handsome tower stand framed by the beautiful surroundings. There are some interesting graves to discover in a wander around the churchyard and a walk to the south side is strongly encouraged to admire the view.
A few steps down the path to the east side of the church will bring the visitor to the garden and back door of the Packhorse. This community owned pub is well worth a visit for its history and refreshments!
