St Andrew
Winterborne Tomson, Dorset
A Dorset gem saved by the ghost of Thomas Hardy.
Tucked away in a quiet and modest part of the village, St John's church is handsome from the outside, being built of a mixture of stone and flint, but it is the inside that makes this church the gem of this part of Dorset.
Bere Regis, Dorset
It is the astonishing timber roof of about 1475 that draws the eye: brightly painted beams span the nave, and protruding from them are 12 life sized figures.
Between and among these are painted faces and bosses, including a face believed to be that of Cardinal Morton, whose gift to the church this roof was.
