St Laurence
Meriden, West Midlands
This stout country church proclaims its Norman origins as you approach, with its collection of five round headed east windows.
Berkswell, Warwickshire
Perhaps even more striking is the quaint half timbered porch, like a miniature cottage on stilts above the south door. It dates from the 16th century and was formerly used as a schoolroom. The south doorway itself is another survival from the 12th century church.
Inside the church, steps leads up to the chancel, with the five Norman windows framed by a round 12th century chancel arch.
Don't miss the well preserved rib vaulted Norman crypt, which has a separate octagonal chamber and some stonework believed to date back to the 8th century.
Much of the woodcarving in Berkswell church was done by Robert Thompson, a well known craftsman from Yorkshire who was born in 1876 and became known as 'the Mouseman of Kilburn' because of his 'signature', a mouse carved in oak. The woodwork at Berkswell has nine examples to look out for.
