St John's was a cathedral for a short time in the 11th century, and its surviving Norman architecture is on a cathedral scale.

The building fell into ruin twice: in the 16th century, when it only survived at all because it had become a parish church, and in the 19th century.

What remains is very impressive, particularly the great Norman piers in the nave. The church still plays an active role in the life of Chester after a thousand years.
