St John the Baptist
Bishops Castle, Shropshire
Located on Offa's Dyke, in a quiet, picturesque valley.
Mainstone, Shropshire
The name ‘Mainstone’ comes from the settlement’s role as a frontier trading post, ‘Maen’ being Welsh for ‘Stone’. There is a large stone at the foot of the pulpit (weighing 200lbs) which is thought to be the measure for a bag of wheat.
The parish registers date back to 1604, and the church has retained its original Elizabethan oak roof structure. This is impressive, given that the walls of the church were almost completely rebuilt in 1887, making it, in effect a Victorian church with an Elizabethan roof.
