The current parish church of St John the Evangelist, Great Stanmore, was dedicated in 1850, replacing a brick built church (1632), the grade II listed ruins of which still stand in the churchyard. The old church is still consecrated, and is used for occasional services.

The architect was Henry Clutton (1814-95) of Hartswood, near Reigate, Surrey. It was built by the Lambeth builder George Myers of Kentish rag and Bath stone in the Early Decorated Gothic style of the mid 19th century and is grade II*. The II* grading has been given primarily in recognition of the monuments that were transferred from the old church, some dating from the 17th century. Many of these monuments are in the church tower.

One of the graves in the churchyard is that of WS Gilbert. The font (by Nicholas Stone circa 1632) was also transferred from the old church, and there are numerous other 18th century and early 19th century wall monuments in the tower. The church includes windows by Burne-Jones and Thomas Willement.
