It became a parish in 1175 and a full list of Rector’s can be found at the back of the church. The church was enlarged by having the north aisle added in 1885, along with other alterations.

There is a fine Romanesque arch leading into the chancel which has some Norman lattice work carved into it. There are also some fine stained glass windows, including the Miners' Memorial window in the north aisle, a modern window depicting the Markham Main colliery.
