Romsey Abbey
Romsey, Hampshire
Founded in 907, the abbey was at first a nunnery then, from 974, a Benedictine Abbey of nuns.
Flint walls, a low, steeply pitched roof and a 15th century wooden porch give the outside of St Margaret's a quiet rural charm.
East Wellow, Hampshire
The largely 13th century interior has an important collection of wall paintings from that time, including a figure of St Christopher carrying the infant Jesus. To his right is a figure of St Margaret of Antioch, martyred because she refused to become part of a harem.
Many people come to East Wellow church to visit the grave of Florence Nightingale, who was buried here with great ceremony on 20th August 1910 and with almost the entire village in attendance. She lies in the family grave, even though her own wish had been to give her body to medical research.
