Parts of the church are Norman, as the west doorway shows, but nothing on the outside prepares the visitor for the interior. Ancient round piers support arches above which is a series of very rare late Norman wall paintings.
They are frescoes, and show martyrdoms, including those of St Andrew and St Peter, scenes from the life of Christ and parts of a 14th century Doom painting.
Many of these marvellous pictures were only discovered in 1979, after an arsonist had set fire to the church. The paintings began to be revealed while cleaning work was being done after the fire.
